Grael design studio

About the studio

Designed around people first

Grael is a small, intentional interior design studio in Brickfields. We take on fewer projects so we can give each one proper attention.

Our story

Started with a sketchbook

Grael grew out of a simple frustration: too many interior design projects that looked impressive on a mood board but felt disconnected from the lives of the people actually living in them. The studio was founded to do things differently — more slowly, more personally, and with far more conversation before a single line gets drawn.

We've worked on apartments in Bangsar, creative offices in Damansara, a bookshop renovation in Chow Kit, and a family home in Shah Alam. The scale changes, but the approach stays the same: understand the person first, then design the space.

Based on Jalan Tun Sambanthan in Brickfields, we're close to the city's creative pulse — which suits us. We draw a lot from the textures, craft traditions, and colour sensibilities that make this part of KL genuinely distinctive.

How we work

What the studio stands for

Listening before drawing

A proper brief takes time. We ask a lot of questions in the early stages — about routines, preferences, what irritates you about your space now — because those answers are what make the design actually work.

Honest conversations

If something won't work within your budget or timeline, we say so early. We'd rather have an awkward five-minute conversation at the start than a difficult one three months in.

Considered choices

We source locally where we can, choose materials that age well, and avoid trends that will feel dated. The goal is a space that still feels right in ten years, not just on completion day.

On-site presence for Studio-to-Site projects. Manages contractor relationships with the kind of calm that only comes from having seen a lot of builds.

How we operate

Standards we hold ourselves to

Client data privacy

We handle all client information, floor plans, and property details with strict confidentiality. Nothing is shared with third parties without consent.

Clear project agreements

Every project begins with a written scope of work — what's included, what's not, timeline milestones, and payment terms. No verbal understandings.

Material quality checks

We inspect materials before they're installed and flag issues before they become problems. Substitutions are always discussed with the client first.

Regular project updates

You receive progress updates at each project milestone. We don't disappear for weeks at a time — you're kept in the loop throughout.

Registered professional practice

Grael operates as a registered design practice in Malaysia. Our work complies with local building regulations and relevant Malaysian Standards where applicable.

Responsible sourcing

We prioritise suppliers with transparent supply chains and prefer locally manufactured materials where quality allows. Sustainability is a consideration, not a marketing point.

Interior design in Kuala Lumpur, done carefully

Grael works across residential and select commercial spaces in the Klang Valley. Our clients range from young professionals furnishing their first apartment to families rethinking a home they've lived in for years. What they share is a desire for something considered — a space that functions well, feels personal, and doesn't look like it came from a catalogue.

Interior design in Malaysia brings particular challenges: tropical climate, high humidity, multi-generational households, and a material landscape that rewards local knowledge. We've spent years building familiarity with what works here — from timber treatments to tile choices that hold up in Malaysian weather.

Brickfields has been our base since the beginning. It's a neighbourhood with a lot of character, and working here has shaped how we approach design — with an eye for heritage detail, craft quality, and the kind of layered richness that doesn't come from spending more, but from looking more carefully.
